Where are you from?

The sphinx the winged

Together with the famous diadem of gold, the Siren, the Gorgon, and a boat nuragica — preserved and exhibited at the archaeological Museum of Crotone — the Sphinx is some of the most important anathémata, “the gifts of the sea” made by the faithful, but especially by travellers, that to the goddess Lacinia, Hera, turned onorandola to earn the favor and protection during long journeys in the Mediterranean and the trade routes of the Ionian sea, of which Kroton had a strategic control. Come in the culture and in the imagination of the Greeks from the far East from ancient Egypt, where it was an emblem of the charm and royalty of the power of the pharaohs, the sphinx becomes part of the mythological creatures Greek — just as the sirens and the gorgons — and in Hellas takes on a unique shape (with the head of a lion, body of goat and tail of a snake) and significance of a renewed and more profound than what we had in origin in the oriental civilization, symbolizing the enigma and mystery of life which man is not able to give answers. Questioning the passers-by asking them a riddle to solve, the sphinx is a reflection of the man himself, on the brevity and fragility of existence, and then on his fate and on the presumption of trusting too much in himself and the individual, as the traveller faces the sea, it must always have in mind the limit.
